We were delighted to collaborate with GIZ Brussels and Enabel for an insightful discussion on “Staying engaged as Team Europe in fragile contexts – Challenges, Opportunities, and Way Forward” at the GIZ Representation Brussels.
Our director Iliana Olivié moderated rich discussions where we presented draft conclusions of our Policy Paper on fragility.
Some of the key takeaways include:
• Long-term engagement is crucial: We need integrated solutions that span local, national and regional levels, recognizing that fragility transcends borders
• Context matters: Distinguishing between fragile and conflict-affected states is essential for aligning EU goals and implementation tools
• Partnership is power: Harnessing collective intelligence and strong partnerships delivers more effective, needs-based solutions
• Clear communication: The EU must articulate its strategic interest in fragile contexts to build mutually beneficial partnerships
• Learning culture: Team Europe actors should build on successful approaches while being transparent about past challenges
This roundtable is part of our ongoing collaboration with GIZ and Enabel to deepen understanding of fragility and develop more effective responses.
With Sophie Desmidt, ECDPM and Dr. Julian Bergmann, German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) leading this great work with the support of Volker Hauck, Sara Gianesello, Benedikt Erforth.
Stay tuned for forthcoming outputs!
