We have hosted a dynamic closed-door workshop in Dakar, Senegal on November 4-6, 2024, bringing together leading experts to examine “The Nexus Between Security and Development in the Sahel: West African Perspectives.”
At a critical moment of global polycrisis and shifting geopolitical dynamics, the workshop fostered frank discussions on recalibrating EU-West Africa relations, particularly in the Sahel region. Distinguished speakers and participants from both continents engaged in crucial dialogues around four key themes:
- Economic development challenges in the Sahel and EU-West Africa cooperation
- A decade of joint efforts in tackling violent extremism
- Impact of global geopolitical shifts on EU-Sahel relations
- The vital role of civil society in promoting development, good governance, and security
We were honoured to welcome diverse perspectives from academic experts, civil society leaders, and security specialists, including contributions from institutions Gorée Institute, MISAHEL, Timbuktu Institute, and many others.
The discussions highlighted the urgent need for a paradigm shift toward more equal partnerships based on mutual trust and shared visions for the future. As the region faces complex challenges from climate change to security issues, building effective cooperation between Europe and West Africa has never been more crucial.
We thank all participants for their valuable insights and look forward to sharing the concrete policy recommendations that emerged from these discussions.
