IDDRI and IDOS hosted an ETTG event on how to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean region towards climate-neutral economies and just energy transitions.
Accelerating energy transitions is a central point in the current dialogue between the two regions, which share an interest in boosting cooperation and investment – public and private – to hopefully ‘fast-track the energy transition and supercharge climate finance’.
The energy sector of LAC is leading the way in the adoption of renewable energies in its matrix and is emerging as a key region in the global fight against climate change. However, states throughout the wider LAC region still face significant challenges in terms of diversifying their electricity generation matrix, expediting the entry of renewable energies, while ensuring at the same time that these transitions are managed in a just and inclusive manner. The webinar brought together leading institutions from several Directorates General of the European Commission, the World Bank, the International Energy Agency, the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), as well as several further experts and think tanks. The discussions revolved around the following key questions:
- How can we accelerate the energy transition in a fair and sustainable way? Which promising experiences can be identified in countries in both regions? How can we replicate them?
- To what extent do the EU’s key policy agendas boost links between and trade relations with LAC on climate change and energy transitions?
- How could the emerging green or sustainable hydrogen industry be an interesting opportunity for collaboration between the two regions?
- How can we best reconcile existing dilemmas in terms of energy production for export vs local use – and other imminent social and environmental trade-offs?
