We are proud to announce the latest policy brief authored by our Director Iliana Olivié and María Santillán O’Shea (Elcano Royal Institute) titled “The 4th International Conference on Financing for Development”. This comprehensive analysis offers critical insights into the complex financial challenges facing the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region and provides nuanced recommendations for addressing these critical development issues.
The policy brief delves into the multifaceted economic landscape of the LAC region, highlighting the persistent challenges of slow economic growth and fiscal deficits that continue to impede development progress. By examining key areas of intervention, the research offers a strategic approach to mobilizing resources, enhancing international cooperation, and addressing climate vulnerabilities that uniquely impact the region.
Drawing on extensive research and expert analysis, the brief presents a holistic view of development financing, emphasizing the critical need for innovative approaches to revenue generation, climate resilience, and multilateral cooperation. The authors argue for a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond traditional funding models, calling for more adaptive and context-sensitive financial mechanisms that can respond to the region’s diverse economic and environmental challenges.
Key recommendations include strengthening domestic revenue mobilization, linking development and climate finance, reforming multilateral development bank governance, and creating more flexible international financial frameworks. The policy brief also underscores the European Union’s potential role in supporting these efforts, suggesting targeted cooperation approaches that leverage the EU’s unique capabilities and commitment to sustainable development.
Researchers and policymakers interested in understanding the complex dynamics of development financing in Latin America and the Caribbean will find this policy brief an invaluable resource for strategic thinking and innovative solutions.
