How do we rebuild amidst ongoing volatility? This was the central question of our recent discussion, “Reconstruction in Larger Terms,” which brought together experts from across the ETTG network to explore the immense challenges of recovery in Ukraine and the MENA region.
Moderated by ETTG Director Iliana Olivié, the panel unpacked the complexities of the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus, arguing that bridging the gap between immediate aid, long-term development, and peacebuilding is no longer just theoretical, but an operational necessity. A key takeaway from the session was that true reconstruction extends far beyond bricks and mortar; it requires deep institutional reform, effective governance, and the restoration of the social fabric.
Karim Karaki and Amandine Sabourin (ECDPM) provided a deep dive into the context of Ukraine, examining the specific governance reforms and institutional resilience needed to secure a sustainable future. Shifting the focus to the Middle East and North Africa, Tina Zintl and Mark Furness (IDOS) analysed the unique hurdles of socio-economic transformation and the difficulty of driving reconstruction within protracted crises. We thank everyone who joined us for this conversation as we close out the year.
